What are the signs a ' friendship' is actually an emotional affair?

I'm talking about an emotional affair without sex. Obviously the conversations would have to be quite intimate. What kind of things would they talk about? Would it qualify as an emotional affair if they start opening up about their lives, past relationships, opinions on politics etc? Or does there have to be flirting involved?
